This actually happened outside Parramatta Children's Court. Another one of Kecik's social commentary comix, although I hasten to add, I am not some hardline law and order freak. I have worked with delinquent kids, though, and I know the difference in effect between an empty threat and a viable deterent.

This was going to be the punchline of the 'Knock Knock' comic, purely as a comment on how hard I found it to make a decent knock knock joke out of 'Kecik', until I realised that knock knock jokes don't have to rhyme. So I made this comic as well. Frankly I have no idea if you can make a decent limerick out of 'kecik', and I didn't try.

For anyone who doesn't get it, orange is one of the few English words - indeed, probably the most obvious example - that are reputed to have no rhyme. 'Door hinge' as a rhyme is Wikipedia's idea, not mine. I'm tempted to add to this page - I can speak sensibly on the subject of rhyme in Aramaic.

One of the upshots of doing a simple blog-based comic - you can be controversial and not have to worry about forums in an uproar afterwards. Kecik will probably have a lot to say about social issues in the future, mainly because I spend a lot of time thinking (and worrying) about what sort of world my little daughter has been born into, and what I should be doing to change it.

The ultrasound actually does say 'baby Kecik' at the bottom - the technician put that on when she asked what the baby's name would be - but obviously I have blown it up here to be able to see it.

Tabula rasa means 'blank slate', and is an understanding of how humans enter the world (ie knowing nothing and having to learn everything from scratch). It was long associated with an idea that the womb was a dark and silent place where the foetus just lay there with no real experiences.

Nowadays we know better.

Once again, Kecik's eyes in the first 3 panels were digitally fiddled due to red-eye. I don't know why people must use a flash when photographing a small baby in a brightly-lit room - common sense should tell you not to set off a flash in a baby's face...

This is a nebelwerfer. Its seriously the first analogously grey thing I thought of when I saw those eyes, right after thinking "Kewl, my child is Numenorean".

Scary on both counts, I guess.

Anyways, Kecik's eyes are seriously grey - not sure if the pic conveys that (it had to be retouched for red-eye). Yvy told me all babies have grey eyes - I choose to ignore that and believe only mine has.

It was only when I read something Tarol Hunt said on Goblins that I realised its September 11. I was gonna post some sort of tribute comic - Kecik saying 'lest we forget' - but it looked cheap, so out of respect I am just going to skip today's comic: everything I have in the can at the moment are toilet jokes (babies are great for those) and we can do without those today.

This really was our first outing with Kecik in the stroller, and we DID forget the camera - this was taken on my phone (hence the lower quality image) which is what inspired this joke in the first place. We didn't really forget the wipes. Or Kecik (she's still in the car seat at this point, although maybe if you could see that the stroller is emnpty at this point it would have been better).

Btw, the Eels won. Cracking game. And Argentina beat France at the World Cup - AGAIN! Thats 4 from 5 of their last outings if my info is correct. Thats what we call... ROFLMAO!!!

For those of you who don't know, our local Rugby League team, the Parramatta Eels, open the NRL finals tonight over in Auckland against the New Zealand (nee Auckland) Warriors. The ground was sold out earlier this week and Sky football expects a bigger audience for this than for any All Blacks match - a big call indeed.

'One-eyed' was a phrase Yvy wasn't familiar with, so I will explain it - it means a fan who only sees things one way. Their team's way. Every decision you get was deserved, every decision against you is a disgrace and an outrage, your team should win the title every year or there is something wrong with the world. Referrees are always idiots (except those rare occasions when they give a decision your way - then they are geniuses), other teams are always cheats. Kecik only had one eye open at a time for most of her first two weeks - no idea why, but she seems to have grown out of it already.

Yvy (and, just recently, her mum) really took to Rugby League - but then, it is the greatest game of all. Nothing else compares as a test of skill, strategy, talent, stamina, guts and determination. Next time you tire of watching soccer players taking dives, or basketball players trash-talking about how tough they are (its a non-contact sport, ya nancys!) tune into Rugby League and see men at work.

A brief comment on the genesis of this comic, which took all of 5 minutes but went through multiple incarnations.

Firstly, yes this is hopelessly out of order, if there is indeed some order to the comics, which by and large there isn't other than a desire for them not to look out of order, which this one does. This is from when Kecik was 4 days old and ready to come home - they said she had a bit of jaundice, and she spent a day in the incubator under lights to fix it (other parents will know this is not serious, so don't worry). Now I think about it, is that actually an incubator? I mean I call it that but maybe it has some other technical name... o well :-) Anyways, many of the comics are indeed from later than this (after she came home) but as I was going through photos today thinking of ideas this one just struck me, so here it is.

The 'incubator / incubus' connection of course hit me instantly (well, I am a fantasy gamer - go figure) and the initial idea was a strip ending with a suggestive comment refering to the incubus' sexual behaviour: something like -

- "o noes, they think I'm an incubus!"

- "hmmm, I can see this having an up-side..."

but while trying to think of a tasteful way to have a 4-day old baby girl make sexual allusions (if there is one...) I quickly rejected the whole thing since, of course, an incubus is male, so exploring its behaviour gets weird and inconsistent very fast. I also rejected the idea of saying something like "thats why the are keeping me surrounded by sunlight!" because, while consistent, it is not clear from the photo that thats exactly what is happening (although it is, as I said above. Thats how you treat mild jaundice, apparently).

I then decided that "o noes, they think I'm an incubus!" should be the punchline of the comic, and just leave it there (other than a nod to the gender inconsistency down here) - I dislike puns but since this comic is based on one, it may as well be used to full effect. I hacked up the photos, but then when I tried to put the speech bubbles in, no matter which way I rotated or flipped the damn things they came out looking like she was talking out her behind.

The rest wrote itself.

I should probably put more effort into getting some of these details and wordings just right, because I frequently find I am not overly happy with some of this stuff. My lolerfs and demotivators are the same - happy with the ideas, really not happy with the execution. Ah well, its all a learning process.
